August 12, 2005   (Look for the subscribers-only discount!)

Hello again, folks, this is Jim the Cook with your latest Rooster News.

RUNNING ROOSTER TURNS ONE!

Just over one year ago, Running Rooster opened its doors to the public. On July 29th, 2004, we sold our first meal to Jeannie Lim in Morgan Hill. Since that first day, we have sold over 7,500 dinners, donated over $1000 to local schools, opened our first store in downtown Hollister, and there are now well over 500 of you loyal Rooster Regulars on this Newsletter list. And it all started with the simple idea that there ought to be a place to buy a good take-home meal for our family.

But Running Rooster still has a ways to grow and mature before it becomes a successful and self-sustaining business, so you'll continue to see us work hard to earn your patronage and your loyalty. And from the bottom of our hearts, Brenda and I, as well as all the staff, thank you for your support, referrals, and feedback.

Tomorrow's Street Fair - Emmaus House Benefit By Running Rooster

Saturday, the Hollister Downtown Association presents its 19th annual Street Fair. From 10am until 6pm, San Benito street will be closed for pedestrians to safely wander around, visiting the kiddie carnival, sidewalk sales, live entertainment, classic car show, local arts and crafts, and more. This is a wonderful hometown tradition and everyone should try to come.

As part of this event, we are teaming up with Nants Foley to sell Root Beer Floats and Brownie Sundaes, with 100% of the sales from those items going to help Emmaus House get open and serving our community. So if you have any time tomorrow, I highly encourage you come downtown, enjoy this great event, and support a great cause while enjoying a tasty treat. $2.50 each, larger donations gratefully accepted.

Menu Changes: You Talked, We Listened

We got lots of good feedback from the last newsletter (thanks!) and while most people seem pretty happy with the menu choices and portions, a few distinct trends came up, and so we are responding:

First, Lasagna is now an everyday part of the menu, along with the Wood Roasted Garlic Rosemary Chicken and the Genuine Memphis Barbeque Back Ribs. All other items will be on a rotation schedule.

Second, we are returning to publishing our monthly menu schedule in advance. It seems people love having our monthly calendar to post on the fridge. Starting in September, you can download yours or pick one up at the store.

Third, the rotating portion of the menu will change more frequently, with new items arriving up to 4 times per week. As a result, there will be more variety on the menu for you frequent buyers, and the faster rotation will bring each dish to the menu more frequently.

Fourth, we are developing some new dishes to increase the selection even more. Some examples of entrees currently under development are Chicken in 40 cloves, Pork in Salsa Verde, Chicken Pot Pies, a vegetarian Lentil Stew, and some soups. Also, we are taste-testing a new item, Chocolate Decadence Cake, at the store. Have a bite while you're there and tell us what you think.

And finally, we are pulling a few menu regulars. For one, Picasso Pizza will now be a Friday-only item. Sorry to those die hard pizza fans (like me!) At least our great pizzas will be there on Fridays. Also, dinner salads will become part of the rotation with all the other dishes, so watch for your favorite on the menu schedule. Lastly, the Traditional Carnitas we have this week will be our last batch, since we can't consistently keep the quality up to our standards. Via con Dios, Carnitas.

B&R Farms Apricot Products

If you came into our store today, you may have noticed that we have started carrying Mary and Jim Rossi's local dried cots and related preserves. We love their products since we started using the Dried Apricot Glaze to make our delicious Apricot Pecan Sandies. Now, if you're looking for Hollister's best local Apricot products, you can get them right in town.

Back To School! Old-Style Tin Lunchboxes

When I was a kid, lunch boxes were made of metal and they made this great clanking sound when you opened or closed them or just banged them around on the school bus. Now when I shop for a lunch box for our kids, everything is either soft vinyl that you can't keep clean or plastic that seems to break so easy. So guess what? We went out and found those old tin lunch boxes, only with modern designs that your kids will love. We have them with both girls' and boys' designs, including Batman, Hello Kitty, Nascar, Disney Princesses, Spiderman, and more. They are only $7.50, so pack your little one a great wholesome lunch and indulge your own nostalgia at the same time.

Last Week's Contest Winner

It always amazes me how quickly folks respond to our little freebie contests. No matter what time of evening I send the emails, at least 4 or 5 people have the answer and reply within a few minutes. I'm going to have to come up with tougher contests, obviously. (Ones that Google can't answer!)

The answer to last week's question (who said "reports of my death are premature"?) was Mark Twain, or Samuel Clemens as more than one pointed out. However, the first correct answer was from Fran Staben, so congratulations Fran. Your Running Rooster baseball cap will be waiting for you at the store tomorrow. We hope you'll wear it with pride as a trophy hard won. For the rest of you, another, even bigger, chance is coming up in two weeks. Watch the skies, as they used to say.

The farm house pot roast was absolutely fabulous. I've made it several times but never did it taste like yours. The roast was perfect and the gravy was exceptional. You guys are great.

Here are the weekly menus for the next two weeks, August something and August something or else.

Note:  All menu items may be subject to substitution or selling out, depending upon our suppliers, our customers' appetites, and the whims of Jim (The Cook).

Subscribers Only Discount

Here's your "thank you for being a Rooster News subscriber" discount for the next week: in honor of our 1 year anniversary, I am discounting the price of the dish that inspired us to start the business -- our Wood Roasted Garlic Rosemary Chicken. Normally $23.75 for a family meal, it will be $15.99 through August 22nd. To get the discount, you have to say "Jerry tells me to eat more chicken" when you order. No limit on the amount of times you can purchase dinner between now and next Monday, but you have to say the magic phrase. At $15.99, that's less than $4.00 per person for a wonderful, wholesome dinner, including side dishes. Can't beat that with a stick.
