May 3, 2006   (Look for the subscribers-only discount!)

Hello again, folks, this is Jim (the Cook) with your monthly Rooster News.

My What A May!

There are lots of special events this month at Running Rooster.  We are going to be really hopping (or running more like it) to keep up with all of it, but here's on overview for you:

May 5th:  Cinco De Mayo Party Food

Sure, this celebration has turned, in some ways, into little more than a big marketing event for Corona and everyone else with something to sell (us too, I admit it) but there is actually a good reason for Americans to celebrate Cinco de Mayo beyond just an excuse to have fun.  Rather than being "Mexican Independence Day" as many believe (about 50 years off), Cinco de Mayo actually celebrates the Battle of Puebla (1862) where a small army of Mexicans defeated a much larger army of invading French soldiers.  Why does this matter north of the Rio Grande?  Well, there is one school of thought which holds that had the French not been delayed in occupying Mexico for another whole year after that battle, they would have been able to render assistance to the Confederates that much earlier, which in turn might have changed the outcome of the American Civil War.  And with the Civil War ending in 1865, the Americans were able to assist the Mexicans in kicking the French back out of Mexico.  So, Cinco de Mayo is a good excuse for Americans and Mexicans to say to each other "Thanks, Neighbor!  Let's have a cold one and something tasty."  As a side note, the puppet installed by Napoleon III to rule Mexico was an Austrian prince named Maximillian, whom the Mexicans promptly shot upon their eventual victory in 1867.  Since I'm part Austrian, I have multiple ties to Cinco de Mayo, kind of like that whole "six degrees of separation" Kevin Bacon thing.

But what was I talking about before I started rambling?  Oh yeah, Food!  For Cinco de Mayo, Running Rooster is going to be offering:

  • Tex-Mex Steak Fajitas with Rajas de Poblanos and Pico de Gallo Corriendo   ($17.99 for two);
  • Seafood Enchiladas   ($17.99 for two);
  • Slow-braised Pork Carnitas   ($9.99 for two);
  • Roasted Tomatillo Salsa   ($4.50 for 8 oz.);
  • Roasted Tomato Salsa   ($4.50 for 8 oz.); and
  • House-made zesty Guacamole   ($5.99 for 8 oz.).

That's a pretty great menu for any Cinco de Mayo party.  These items are available Friday only.  We'll have samples, chips, and lots of fun.  Hope to see you there.

Now to May 12th:  Mother's Day Gift Cards with Free Delivery

Mother's Day.  It's all about flowers, breakfast in bed (or a nice brunch), and a hand-made card from the little ones.  At least that's how it is on TV.  In real life, Mom may want something that really helps her out for Mother's Day.  Let's face it, being a mom?  Hardest job in the world.  That's why women do it instead of men.  Anyway, we're thinking that one possible great gift for Mom on Mother's Day would be a Running Rooster Gift Card with a free delivery coupon.  Sure, you're going to take care of her on Mother's Day, not let her cook or do dishes, but there are 364 other days a year right?  Maybe she would like a break on one of those days.  With a Running Rooster Gift Card and a free delivery coupon, Mom can pick a day of her own choosing when someone else does the cooking and the cleaning.  You pick the denomination for the gift card and we'll throw in the free delivery coupon.  That way, whenever Mom wants, she just picks up the phone and Poof!  Dinner's on the doorstep.  Sounds good to me.

Free delivery coupons are available with any gift card purchase between now and Mother's Day.

Week of May 15th:  Store Anniversary Celebration - Hot Food For Dinner!

Immediately after Mother's Day, the week of May 15th, we are going to be throwing ourselves a birthday party to celebrate our one-year anniversary at the downtown Hollister store.  But this will be more than just the usual free balloons for the kids.  (OK, there WILL be free balloons for the kids, but that's not all.)  First off, there will be free treats and samples so just walking in the door will be a tasty experience.  Second, each day we are going to put a different lunch and dinner menu item on sale.  But you'll have to come in to see what they are.  Third, all that week we are going to be grilling big thick juicy 1/2 pound burgers at lunch at the store .  You can get yours right off the grill.

Lastly, and most significantly, we are using this store anniversary to kick off our new Running Rooster dinner menu.  Starting that week, Running Rooster will be offering hot fresh-from-the-rotisserie chickens every evening from 4:30 to 6:30.  These delicious chickens will be hot and ready to take home, or even to eat in the store.  Along with the chickens we will have hot mashed potatoes, gravy (I promise), and a vegetable so you can get an entire warm meal.  Of course, we'll still have a selection of freshly made and chilled other entrees for you to choose from.  There are some other menu changes as well, but we can tell you about it when we see you.

Memorial Day:  The Return of Rooster Grillers

Memorial Day used to mean the return of white gloves and shoes for the ladies.  Now, it's all about the backyard barbeque.  Am I right guys?  We're using Memorial Day weekend to bring back an old friend.  Once again this summer, Running Rooster will be offering dry-aged 1 3/8" thick USDA Choice Ribeye Steaks that you can toss on your grill at home and cook them just the way you like them.  Super tender and with a concentrated beefy flavor that only dry-aging can achieve, our Rooster Griller Ribeyes bring the taste of a great steakhouse into your own back yard.

Over the summer we'll be offering other kinds of Grillers as well, so stay tuned!

Rooster Brew - Great new organic coffee

We've been offering brewed coffee in the store for a little while now, but our goal was always to carry a really outstanding unique line of coffee that was superior to anything else you could buy in town.  I'm pleased to say that we have achieved that goal.  Brenda and I went and found a great small coffee roaster in the Bay Area that is dedicated to quality.  And we have engaged them to roast three different coffees for us which we are now offering under the label "Rooster Brew".

The best news is that Rooster Brew coffee is completely ORGANIC and FAIR TRADE.  Being organic is important to many of you for obvious reasons, but with Rooster Brew Coffee, you can actually taste the difference in the cup.  I've never tasted such a clean and smooth cup of coffee.  The issue of fair trade coffee may be less familiar to you, however.  Essentially, fair trade coffee is purchased through a distribution chain which insures that the grower of the coffee beans is paid a fair price for their product rather than being price-exploited by middle-men which is more commonly the norm.  This gives the growers, often in poorer regions of the world, a fair share of the revenues from the coffee and an economic incentive to continue growing great coffee beans rather than switching to more environmentally degrading (or sometimes illegal) ways of earning money from the land (see www.fairtradecertified.org).

Our Organic, Fair-Trade Rooster Brew coffees are:

  • Morning Crow Blend - Morning Crow Blend is a blend of light and dark roasts that is smooth and aromatic with chocolate undertones. The blended roasts bring out the best of the organic beans, yielding a coffee that is complex and satisfying.
  • Le Coq Royal (French Roast) - Le Coq Royal is Running Rooster’s truly outstanding French Roast coffee. The flavor is thick and velvety with a hint of marshmallow and a lingering buttery finish. Very full flavored yet with none of the over-roasted burnt flavors of many French Roasts.
  • Mellow Bird Decaf - Mellow Bird is a decaf coffee that finally delivers the flavor of the best caffeinated coffee. Using top quality beans and a Swiss water process to remove the caffeine, Mellow Bird Decaf is bold and smooth with a clean sweet finish. Perfect for after dinner.

You can get any of these three great coffees at any time during our regular hours.  A 16 oz to go cup or in-store bottomless mug is only $1.00 (tasting samples are FREE!)  And we offer the beans for you to brew your own great coffee at home.  Morning Crow and Le Coq Royal come in full 1 lb bags (not 12 ounces like most premium coffees) and are priced at $11.99 per pound, a great price for organic coffee of this quality.  Mellow Bird Decaf costs a little more at $12.99 per pound due to the expense of the decaffeination process.  We hope you will try some soon.

We're Looking for Summer Help

One of our great Rooster-ites working the day shift at the store will be gone for the summer (we'll miss you Sandy!)  So we're looking for someone who can be as much fun, as friendly, as fast behind the counter, and look as good behind the wheel of the Rooster Truck as our own Sandy.  If you know someone who you think would be great working at Running Rooster, then we want to hear about it!  Send an email to Brenda with the info.  Successful employee referrals get a $50 Running Rooster gift card as a thank you.

May Fundraisers

Our fundraisers this month are:

  • May 1-5:  Hollister Aftershocks Traveling Baseball
  • May 8-12:  Avon Breast Cancer 911 Angels
  • May 15-19:  Jovenes de Antano
  • May 22-26:  Rancho San Justo 8th Grade

No May Menu Calendars

I know that many of you have been asking about the May menu calendars, but with the changes in our menu scheduling and rotation that are starting during our Anniversary Celebration week (May 15th, see above) it doesn't make as much sense to publish a menu in that way anymore.  So we are currently designing a new handout which we hope to have available before the 15th.  Thanks for your patience.

Subscribers Discount

Well, Spring seems to finally have sprung, and I don't know about your kids, but mine have taken to counting the number of days left in the school year.  Weeds are growing like crazy and I'm getting dive-bombed by the hummingbirds.  In honor of this annual period of frenzy (slightly delayed) the subscribers-only discount phrase for the next few weeks is "Do you have anything I can take for this Spring Fever?"  Remember to use this phrase for a 10% discount on every order at Running Rooster (including lunch).
