For January 2009

Happy New Year!

And let's hope it is a happy one, at least happier than the last half of 2008.  For real estate and construction people, I think the whole year was pretty rotten.  So here's to better luck, better jobs, a better economy, fewer foreclosures, fewer layoffs, more building, and improved safety and health for all of Hollister and our area.  And world peace, as long as we're wishing on a star.  Why not?  It's about time don't you think?

New Items on the Menu

Outlaw French Fries (starting Friday)
They've been on the secret menu for a month now (RoosterTweets members were told) but starting Friday, Outlaw French Fries will be available to all.  Made with our same great crispy french fries you already know, we add the Outlaw Seasoning from the sorely-missed Outlaw Wrap to give these fries a good zesty kick.  They go great with a spicier burger, like the "Jefe" (see below).

Onion Rings (starting Monday)
Lots of requests for these and I love them too.  The only thing that's been holding me up on Onion Rings is their cost:  a good onion ring is expensive compared to fries.  But we're going to bring them on anyway and see how they do.  I've tried out a number of different products and picked one I hope you'll like.  Running Rooster Onion Rings (not available until Monday 1/12) are made from sweet onions, cut extra thick, with a beer batter coating.  They'll be cooked to order so you'll get them hot and crispy.  A side order will be $3.50, or $1.50 more if you are swapping them for fries.

1/4lb Burger Combo - $5.79 (starting Sunday)
I know these are frugal times for all of us, and frugal times deserve a frugal burger.  Not a bad cheap burger, but a good deal on a good burger so you can treat yourself more often.  In that vein, we're offering our 1/4lb kid's burger in an adult version, with all the trimmings, fries, and an adult soda for $5.79 (starting this Sunday 1/11).

Now Burger King calls their 1/4lb burger the Whopper® and McDonald's calls theirs a Big Mac®.  We used to call ours a kid's burger, but I think the humble hamburger truly is America's great national dish, and it deserves more respect than it gets from lots of restaurants.  So you can get a McDonald's Big Mac® Combo Meal for $5.39 or you can get a Running Rooster 1/4lb Combo for $5.79.  In my humble (admittedly biased) opinion, that extra 40¢ buys you a lot of flavor.

Where you gonna eat better for less than $5.79?  Not many places.

Big Mac® is a registered trademark of McDonald's Corporation.  Whopper® is a registered trademark of Burger King Holdings.

This Month's Featured Burger

The 'Jefe'

We put this burger combo out to the RoosterTweets members last month and it got good reviews, especially in combo with the Outlaw Fries.  The picture at right is generic, sorry.  The 'Jefe' burger comes with pepperjack cheese, chipotle mayo (on the side) and jalapeños.  This gives it a nice kick without burning holes in your socks.  If you prefer your socks with holes, than ask us to put some Tapatio on it while it cooks.  That way your tongue will cook too when you bite into this baby.  (For those of you who remember the "Rajas" burger we did as a special, it was made this way.)

If you want to try it, just request a "Jefe" or a "Jefe" with hot sauce.  Available immediately in all three sizes for the price of a regular cheeseburger.

Feedback Requested

New Ideas in the New Year from Old Friends

The start of a new year seems like a great time to take stock and take suggestions.  I'm asking any of you with an opinion about what we at Running Rooster should add, drop, or just change, to let me have it.  After all, how many companies that you patronize have an owner who personally reads and considers all your feedback?  Certainly not the big ones, that's the benefit of a small local business.

Here are some areas where I'm looking for feedback:

  • How do you feel about us adding beer and wine to our offerings?  Good or bad?
  • What additional entrees or burger toppings would you like?
  • Is there something we dropped from the menu that you feel was a mistake?
  • Do you like the coupons in your email, or is it just more spam?
  • What about garlic fries? (Yes, I've asked this before)
  • Would having TV screens on the walls with some games going be an added attraction or would it ruin the nice quiet atmosphere?

These are just a couple of the things we are discussing and debating amongst ourselves.  If you have an opinion about these or other matters, please write me.

You can let me have it by clicking here, and the email will go straight to me.  Thanks in advance, I won't be able to answer everyone individually.

Odds and Ends

RoosterTweets
Several people have asked me to resend the info on signing up for RoosterTweets so here it is:  from your cell phone, text "follow runningrooster" to the number 40404.  When it asks you for a username, make one up.  That's it.

A couple of people don't seem to be getting the regular updates.  I don't know why that is, but my only suggestion is to log on to twitter (www.twitter.com) using the name you created on your cell, then go to our page (www.twitter.com/runningrooster) and click the "follow" link.  RoosterTweets are based on Twitter, and millions of people use it.  I'm sure there are a couple bugs in the system.  I have noticed that sometimes I get an email saying that so-and-so is following runningrooster, but then they don't show up on the list of followers.  Don't know why.

For those of you who don't know what RoosterTweets are, they are small text messages that come to your cell phone offering you a discount.  You'll get one or two per week.  Think of them as text-coupons on your cell for Running Rooster.  Why do we have RoosterTweets if we also have this email newsletter?  Because emails often get dumped, blocked, or overlooked as our inboxes get inundated with spam and marketing junk.  RoosterTweets allow us to send you coupons in a lightweight and uncluttered manner.

Soda Flavor Changes
Depending upon when the Coca Cola people come out, we're going to be changing up some of the flavors on our soda machine.  Fanta, Hi-C, and Mr. Pibb will go bye-bye.  In their place will be Dr. Pepper (finally!), Barq's Root Beer, and Coke Zero (which is Coke Classic with no sugar).  Hope you like the changes.

Dropping Some Toppings
We're dropping the Cilantro Pesto and Roasted Tomato Salsa toppings as they don't seem to be getting any traction.  The Chipotle Mayo, on the other hand, is a big hit, in case you haven't tried it yet.  Great on a burger or the Doc's Delight.
